An ignition interlock device or breath alcohol ignition interlock device (Baiid) measures and records the driver's Blood Alcohol article (Bac). The Baiid uses computer logic and internal memory to connect with a car's ignition. It prevents a car from starting if a driver's blood alcohol article is 0.025 or higher. Drivers hoping for reinstated driving privileges after being expensed with complicated Owis, Duis, or other related offenses are often required to have an interlock device for a minimum of one year. Though ignition interlock devices are often a confident and safe means for drivers to get behind the wheel again, when violated they present a serious threat to drivers who are anticipating full license reinstatement.
Violations can be major or minor. Minor violations include: three start-up test failures within a monitoring period, or if after one week of receiving a scheduled monitoring appointment, the driver fails to get the Baiid serviced. Major interlock violations include: rolling re-test violations, tampering with the device, circumventing the interlock device, three or more minor Baiid violations within the monitoring period, using a car without a properly installed interlock device, a drunk driving arrest and a blood alcohol test at or above .025 without a subsequent sample of less than .025 within 5 minutes. Regardless of whether the offense is major or minor, an ignition interlock device violation is a needful matter that is often penalized severely by the Secretary of State. A minor interlock violation will succeed in an additional three-months the driver must wait before obtaining eligibility to ask a license petition hearing. A major interlock violation will cause the revocation of the driver's license.

Whether the interlock device violation is classified as major or minor, drivers may at times feel that their interlock violation is shocking and unwarranted because they did not engage in alcohol usage. Drivers may find that their interlock device wrongly recorded a high Bac. These cases query that the driver ask a hearing immediately, before losing their right to appeal.
